I've Been SOLD!  (Ok....maybe not me, but my company)

I helped found the company back in 2002 with five others on three different continents. Back then we only had 15 engineers! Now we've grown to over 165 engineers, a ton of clients & about 15 million a year in revenue.

Honestly, I'd personally rather not sell,  (umm, have you seen the job market out there?!) but three of our partners are retirement age and ready to kick back & enjoy the beach. I can understand. Guys, it has been fun!

(they read my blog ;)  )

So, over the last 6-7 years, I've handled our sales, marketing, communications, advertising & general business development in the US. Plus, I've project managed dozens of successful projects, some including as many as 30 engineers.

Even though it seems scary out there, I'm actually looking forward to new opportunities. Even though we've sold off the product division (which represents most of my time in sales efforts) we'll still be keeping our service contracts thru the duration of 2010, that will keep me a little busy.

BUT... I've been itching to do ministry again & have some related projects in the works, we'll see!  But, let me know if you know of any good gigs out there!

Lesson to marketers...the public is NOT always on your side

This is not necessarily the main thrust of this article, but something people embracing social media in business have to learn & recognize when embarking on a Consumer Generated Media (CGM) campaign.  http://adjix.com/5ydw

A BAD example of how to use CGM.... when GM asked people to do youtube shorts showing off their SUVs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oNedC3j0e4

Good use of CGM, Heinz & Dorritos ads,  (Dorritos for the Superbowl 2009).  They had a place for people to load them and be approved. They still let parodies air and didn't censor too much, but the knowledge that the company was involved likely lessened the amount of people slamming the brand.

Don’t Sell Like You Buy

Very interesting article. Pretty common knowledge, but very well explained. The idea is that when we sell, we develop a sales process based upon what WE think our prospects want when we buy, rather than thoroughly listening & letting them tell us what or why it is they are making a decision.  As a result, in a rush to close a sale, we'll often discuss points or issues they have no interest in, ASSUMING we know why they might buy....  instead, qualify, ask more questions, listen, be quiet, investigate!   http://adjix.com/5yh9

Volunteered in my wife's class today

So, I volunteered in my wife's classroom, she has a SHARP class.

I'm in there a fair amount, I try to go on the field trips, surprise

her for lunch and just hang out a little while if I can. (usually I

get in trouble & get the class riled up & get kicked out!) The

highlight every year is I bring in some recording gear and I do a

mini "album" where I record the over some really basic

drum/bass/guitar tracks I lay down in front of them.

So, anyway, one of her assignments was for the kids to do a

5 page powerpoint.  This one kid, (remember, this is FOURTH grade)

didn't do that, he did 185 page powerpoint! He illustrated it,

had music, sound effects, everything. CRAZY! I saw this article

and it reminded me of the trouble teachers face...

Newsboys Concert. Michael Tait (DC Talk) is new lead singer!

I took our Kyle, Kellie & Kassidy &  three of their friends to see Newsboys at Calvary Community last night. I have  been a huge fan since literally 1991 when I played in the Disciples. We did a show with the very first installment of the Newsboys at a festival in Central California. They were pretty unknown then, in fact, I think we were better known than them at the time. But, there show & ministry was awesome.

Over the years, they have just gotten better and better, Peter Furhler is a great songwriter and band leader. Great speaker too!  So, when they took the stage without Peter, I have to be honest, I thought, "this is lame." But, the reality is, Michael Tait (from DC Talk) is an absolutely amazing singer.

So, with Peter still involved as a studio dude and songwriter, and Tait singing live, this could be a very smart move.  I just wish they'd target secular stations like many other Christian artists have.
